Proyecto Tejiendo Vida Venezuela

Did you know midwives can prevent up to 83% of maternal deaths?!
Proyecto Tejiendo Vida Venezuela

Our Mission
To establish the first professional midwifery education program in Venezuela, aligned with international standards set by the WHO and the ICM and delivered in partnership with Venezuelan universities.
Through this initiative, we aim to develop a comprehensive, competency-based education model that integrates academic training with clinical practice, including the creation of a community-based birth center where students can learn and graduates apply the midwifery model of care.
We envision a transformed maternal health system in Venezuela where women — particularly those accessing public health services — receive respectful, safe, and high-quality care throughout the continuum from preconception to postpartum.
In this future, Venezuelan women are empowered with knowledge, autonomy, and support in their maternity journeys, and midwifery is fully integrated as a recognized and essential component of the health system.
We see professional midwifery education as a foundational pillar for this transformation — creating new pathways for women to grow professionally, strengthen their communities, and contribute to a more equitable and dignified model of care.
Our Vision
How do we get there?
1. CONSULT women as rights-holders, alongside birth workers, healthcare providers, and communities, to understand gaps in the current maternal health system and co-create solutions grounded in lived experience, dignity, and the realities of care across the continuum from pregnancy to postpartum.
2. FACILITATE
public health awareness and inter-professional knowledge exchange through workshops, courses, and dialogue spaces. This includes fostering collaboration between Venezuelan and international academic institutions to strengthen understanding of the midwifery model of care and respectful maternity care.
3. DEVELOP the first professional midwifery education curriculum in Venezuela in partnership with Venezuelan and international academic institutions, aligned with WHO and ICM standards and adapted to the Venezuelan context based on consultation and knowledge exchange findings.
In parallel, develop the foundational legislative and regulatory framework required to support the recognition and integration of midwifery within the national health system.
4. IMPLEMENT through the opening of the first cohort of midwifery students and the establishment of a midwife-led birth center as a clinical training and care site, where the midwifery model of care can be practiced in an integrated, inter-professional, and community-centered setting.
In parallel, advance legislative & policy change to support the formal integration of midwives into the healthcare system in alignment with public health policy standards and human rights principles.
Our Pillars
Improving maternal and neonatal health in Venezuela requires patience, evidence, and deep respect for context. These values guide how we think, how we work, and how we remain accountable.
Women-Led
We center women's voices through collaboration, consultation, and co-created solutions.
Dignity
We reject the normalization of abuse within the maternal health care system and work to restore dignity in care.
Partnership
Lasting, sustainable progress requires cross-sector partnerships and a collaborative approach.
Acknowledgement
We recognize this as an urgent and unacceptable crisis that demands immediate action and sustainable solutions.
Evidence
Solutions must be grounded in rigorous data, research, consultation, and feasibility. Not quick fixes.
Adaptability
We learn continuously, reflecting on new knowledge as it emerges in a dynamic and complex context.
